Alternative Study Spaces

Looking for somewhere to study when the Learning Centre is closed?

Whilst the Learning Centre is a great place to study and has access to all of the textbooks and journals you are likely to need for your studies, it is only open to Monday – Friday 9:30 A.M. – 5:30 P.M. – which for some of you, may not be enough!

If you are keen to find a good place to study outside of our opening hours, we’re going to discuss a few other options below.

Manchester Central and City Libraries

Location: St. Peter’s Square, City Centre, M2 5PD

Opening Times: Monday – Thursday 9 A.M. – 8 P.M.; Friday – Sunday 9 A.M. – 5 P.M.

The Manchester Central and City Libraries are both based in St. Peter’s Square in Manchester City Centre. Anyone who lives in Manchester can join the library.

The Library has a great selection of fiction and non-fiction, a rare book collection (including the Bellot Chinese collection), archives, computers and WiFi, and even a cafe.

Do I need to join?

If you are just using the space to study, or borrowing books whilst within the Library itself (not taking them home) you don’t need to join. If you want to take books home you will need to join the Library and get a Library card.

How Do I Join?

If you do want to join, you can join easily by registering for an online account. You then need to go into the Library in person with any requested documents to collect your Library card.

The website to go to is:

Manchester University Library

For University of Manchester (UoM) Pathway students, you can now get access to the Manchester University Library facilities and resources. You should have been contacted with details on how to get this access. If you are on this pathway but have not received an email please contact us, or who will provide you with the full information.

You simply need to fill out an access form and turn up to the Main Library with your INTO ID. You will then get a Library ID card.

There are some great cafes in Manchester which are ideal for studying in. If you fancy a change of scenery, or to explore the city more we recommend checking out one of these great cafes!

Oppidan Social
